Today Apple announced the new Apple iPhone which will be available in .  The new phone hardware will sport the inclusion of a new internal compass, larger camera, faster processor for games and multimedia and larger capacity options.  The exterior appearance of the device remains largely the same and these new features pose little surprise to seasoned Apple watchers.

Of greater news is the new iPhone operating system (iPhoneOS 3.0).  This includes a number of long awaited features such as cut and paste functionality, MMS (media messaging) support, video recording support, universal horizontal keyboard and many others.  The new OS is available to existing iPhone users as a download from the Apple site and will also work with existing iPod touch devices (although the iPod download comes at a small charge).

All these improvements address long standing concerns with the Apple device and should help to improve its standing in a market where the iPhone is already one of the stronger players.  This can only serve to increase the number of mobile users with highly capable internet devices and should help to increase access to this fledgling and largely untapped market.

Apple has sold more than 1 billion applications world wide through its iPhone App Store.  There are a large variety of application available for the iPhone from promotional applications through to useful utilities and games.  iPhone applications can prove to be an excellent way to make your service or information about your products available to mobile users in a novel (or even viral) way.
